Chain Preparation - New Chain

Applying wax to your chain is a straight forward and low-maintenance task. However, it is crucial to remove all oil and factory grease before waxing. While we typically use an ultrasonic cleaner, bio-degreasers and special drying agents for this process, you can adequately prepare your chain at home by following the steps below. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact Kubit.

  1. Place your chain in a clean and dry plastic box or old retired bike bottle with a tight fitting lid, ensure the chain is covered with so called "white spirits"(rense benzin, petroleum lugtfri, acetone, mineralsk terpentin), let it soak for at least 10 minutes, preferably overnight.

  2. Aggressively shake your chain in the solution to loosen all oil, grease, and contaminants. Ensure lid is securely fitted.

  3. Remove the chain from the container and pour the used white spirits into a container with a tight fitting lid for future re-use.

  4. Repeat steps one and two using fresh white spirits. There is no need to let the chain soak this time.

  5. Once again, remove the chain from the solution and pour off all white spirits for recycling.Repeat this process until the solution becomes clear. Typically, two repeats are sufficient for a new chain.

  6. Using a different clean container or bottle, cover your chain in 93-99% “rubbing alcohol”. Let it soak for ten minutes, then agitate. If your chain is sufficiently clean, the solution should be completely clear. This alcohol can be re-used for wiping the waxed chain clean after dirty rides, by applying small amounts to a rag.

  7. Take the chain out of the clean alcohol and hang it to dry. We recommend feeding the chain onto a heavy metal wire and allowing it to completely dry in a warm room,or perhaps near a radiator while the wax is melting.

  8. This chain preparation process is a one-time requirement. Once the chain has been initially prepared, subsequent waxing becomes a simple process. However, if oils or drip lubes that are incompatible with waxing are used, this process will need to be repeated.

Chain Waxing

Please note: Kubit chain wax should be melted in a slow cooker, or water bath held below boiling point. Heating wax in a pan or in a rice cooker can damage the wax or cause fires if left unattended and overheated. Ulternatively a sous vide machine can work as the temperatures can be maintained low, however great care must be taken to ensure no water gets into the melted wax.

Our wax remains stable at the temperatures provided in most slow cookers (55 to 85C). We recommend using the low setting and leaving the lid off of the cooker if it is left unsupervised. Take care when handling the wax and chains. Although not strictly necessary, wearing clean gloves can assist in handling the chains, which will be hot during removal.

  1. Place your wax in the slow cooker and set it to medium or high heat. Adjust to low if you need to leave the wax unsupervised. Or place a sufficient quantity of wax, 12 kubits for example, in the supplied biodegradable wax heating bag and into 10cm deep warm water within a large pot. heat on low settings to ensure water temperature does not excede circa 85C. In order to extend the lifetime of our biodegradable wax bag do not exceed 85C.

  2. Alternatively the silicone wax bag is a perfect accessory for water bath protocol and can easily handle higher temperatures without compromising lifetime.

  3. place your chain onto a heavy metal wire or our chain holder.

  4. Place your chain in the wax while it melts.

  5. Agitate the chain using the heavy metal wire, ensuring it remains fully submerged in the liquid wax, and use great care not to damage the bio-bag or silicone wax bag.

  6. Leave your chain in the hot wax for at least 10 minutes to ensure the chain is thoroughly heated. A cold chain can cause the wax to solidify, preventing it from penetrating the links and rollers.

  7. Agitate the chain again once it has heated sufficiently, then slowly remove it from the wax, allowing any excess wax to drip back into the slow cooker or bag.

  8. Hang the chain to dry. You can leave it on the wire or remove it and let it hang freely. For a clean appearance, we recommend rubbing down the outer plates while the chain is still hot. Leaving wax on the outer plates provides increased protection against corrosion in wet weather, but adds weight and a greater amount of loss due to excess wax falling off during the break in period.

  9. Replace the chain on the bike and enjoy an efficient, clean, and silent drive-train.

Waxed Chain Maintenance

A waxed chain is simple and easy to maintain.

  • We recommend re-applying Kubit hot melt wax after approximately 300km, or 250km in extreme wet weather or when used in dirty conditions.

  • Although cleaning is not strictly necessary, we advise rinsing your chain with 90C hot water before waxing. This ensures that all contaminants are removed and your wax remains uncontaminated. However it is best to also de-wet the chain by allowing it to dry or by re-using the previously used rubbing alcohol, and allowing to dry prior to reapplying wax. This will ensure your wax remains clean.

  • When reapplying wax, it is not necessary to clean or degrease your chain. Simply turn on your slow cooker containing Kubit hot wax, place your chain onto a heavy metal wire, and place it in the wax.

  • Once the wax has fully melted and your chain has been submerged for circa 10 minutes, agitate the chain while it is submerged in the wax. Then, remove it, hang it to dry, and re-fit to your bike.

YBN QR Master Link 11s

11 Speed reusable (5 times) chain Master Link, no tools required to install link. 1 link (two parts)

1) Closing: Properly measure, cut and fit chain, bring the ends together and insert both halves of the Master Link into the chain ends.

2) Press both halves of the Master Link together and lock in place by using a closing tool, If you do not have a closing tool; move the connector link up by rotating the tire, hold the wheel with the hand-break and apply forward pressure on the pedal, ensure you hear a click as proof the Master Link is correctly locked.

3) Opening: Use a Link opening tool, press both ends of the Master Link connector together, you can see the pin slide in to the open position.

Caution: Always use a new Master Link when fitting a new chain. Failure to size the chain properly or to engage the Master Link correctly can cause damage to the chain and eventually total chain failure, leading to injury, or bicycle damage.

Always use a new chain when replacing a group set.

Always use a Master Link for chain connecting. Do NOT re-use cut pins from the chain.

Always check that Master Link is fully engaged.

YBN Suggests to replace a Master Link when it is worn or after locking and unlocking 5 times.

Failure to follow these instructions may result in breakage and cause injury.

Do not re-use chain pins after chain sizing.

Reconnect a new chain using a new YBN Master Link.
